Transactional vs Transformational Leaders
A transactional leader is guided by the question, “What is in it for me?” They are willing to do things for others only if it benefits themselves or their vision.
They keep score by thinking that if I have done this many things for others then they should do that many things for me.
The problem with this is that it is a low form of leadership. There is little sense of satisfaction in knowing that you have made a difference. This type of leadership often leads to burnout.
There is another way though and that is transformational leadership. Transformational leaders are guided by the question, “How can I serve and empower others?”
They are invested in developing future leaders and helping people live up to their potential. They do things for others without expecting anything in return. They are laser-focused on the success of their team as well as the overall well-being of their members. These leaders understand that relationships and caring are at the core of leadership.
Transformational leaders are leaders that people want to follow. Team members are motivated by them and enjoy being in their presence.
Here are five ways to become a transformational leader:
*Have a compelling shared vision - This should be clear to everyone on the team and motivate them to work towards it.
*Build meaningful relationships - spend time with people and get to know their interests and goals. Show them that you truly care about their well-being.
*Develop future leaders - Give people the skills, strategies, and opportunities to become successful leaders.
*Show appreciation - Consistently recognize people in different ways to show them that they are valued.
*Hold others to a high standard - People are capable of doing more than they realize. As a leader, it is your job to hold them to high standards so that they can be the best version of themselves.
Make a conscious decision today that you are going to be a transformational leader. By doing this you will impact on a far greater level and have a sense of fulfillment in knowing that you are making a difference!
