Creating a Successful Company Culture
When you are in a successful company culture it just feels different. People are upbeat, motivated, engaged, and there is a sense of camaraderie. Team members feel like they can be themselves and are willing to take chances. This leads to higher performance, innovation, and retention.
Creating this thriving company culture is something that leaders are often thinking about. Some leaders can consistently create high-performing and positive cultures while others are often a part of toxic ones.
The one thing about culture is that it is dynamic and ever-changing. That means that if you are a part of one that is struggling it can be improved. It takes intentional work and the right strategies. Here are some tested strategies that will help you build the right one for your organization.
Know what kind of culture you want to create. This is based on your personality and values, your team members, and the product that you sell. Some successful company cultures put a premium on creativity and innovation. In others, the main emphasis is kindness and inclusion. Decide what your ideal culture looks like to have an outstanding company that fits your vision.
Be guided by your core values. Once you know the culture that you want then set core values that are in alignment with that. Core values are more than just words. They are what your company is about and it drives attitudes and behavior.
Be intentional with your energy. Remember this, “Energy is contagious, especially when it comes from the leader.” The energy that the leader gives off plays a major role in the culture. If you want a culture that is positive, supportive, and enthusiastic then the leadership team needs to be giving off this energy.
Get the right people in place. Culture starts with people. When you are hiring ask yourself, “Does this person fit in with our ideal culture?” If the answer is no, then they may not be the best person for the job.
Create a culture of presence. To do this set the expectation that people will be fully present with each other. This means giving people your full attention in a 1-on-1 interaction, a small group, or a meeting. This will lead to improvements in communication and relationships.
Show appreciation. Successful companies look for ways to recognize and celebrate each other at all levels. Be intentional about this and look for new ways to appreciate your employees. This could be a 1-on-1 conversation, leaving a handwritten note, through social media, or in a meeting.
Welcome accountability. Having high standards is an essential part of a company. When these aren’t met then there needs to be accountability. If there isn’t accountability then the culture suffers. The execution of accountability is an essential piece as well.
Embrace constructive feedback. Create a culture that is growth-oriented and where people are open to feedback. Teach your team both how to deliver and how to accept feedback.
A leader can have a massive impact on company culture. It is one of the great responsibilities of leadership. Make sure to be intentional about creating this culture by using the strategies above.
